Create an organic nest and eggs using slate and glass
This course will show you step-by-step how to make a mosaic nest.
It's perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a starter project using slate.
Learn a range of mosaic skills
In the course you will learn how to
- Prepare materials: slate, glass and ceramic tile.
- Mix and work with tile adhesive (also known as thinset)
- Put the mosaic together
- Finish off the background neatly
Created for beginners
A simple design is provided. This means less time is spent planning and more time can be spent making your mosaic.
No need for precision cutting. The organic nature of the nest means you can use different sized pieces, filling any gaps with smaller bits.
Different options for eggs. Use whatever you have available. Pebbles are the simplest option, or you can experiment with cutting egg shapes from tiles, or use colourful glass rods and stringers.
Make it your own. The demonstration mosaic in this course is made with slate but the design works equally well with other materials. For example, you could use a broken plant pot or recycle a broken bowl.
Nest: Broken terracotta pot, ceramic tile and glass stringers.
Eggs: Cut from a broken bowl.
Nest: Slate and smalti
Eggs: Recycled metal, glass rods and stringers.
Nest: Broken ceramic bowl
